Malacca Roadtrippin' Part I

It was the last weekend of year 2013 that we roadtripped to Malacaa. The thing about traveling to Malaysia is the jam at the causeway. It seems that no matter how early or late you enter Malaysia, there will always be a group of like-minded people.

Note to self: Remember to bring along some in-car entertainment on the next trip to Malaysia.

With one rest stop (R&R Machap), the drive up to Malacca took around 3 hours with several tolls along the way:

Entry to Malaysia from SG Checkpoint - SGD$3.20
Entry to Malaysia from Malaysia Checkpoint - RM7.50
3 tolls along the way - around RM30

Always been a favourite of places with rustic charm, I immediately fell in love with the place One point of caution, however, is the traffic in Malacca. If your itinerary mostly focuses on the Jonker area, it is advisable to book a shuttle bus from your hotel to travel to the town instead of self-drive.

As it was a short 2D1N trip, our schedule was pretty packed. Lunch was at the famous teochew restaurant, Teo Soon Loong Seafood Restaurant (潮顺龙栈). Reservation is needed as there were only 8 tables in the restaurant (we counted, and indeed it's true!). Being the typical kiasu Singaporeans, we booked it way in advance.

No.55, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Malacca Town, Melaka 75200

What we ordered: Oyster noodle, Chicken in rice wine, really crunchy vegetable, fresh steamed promfret, Ngoh Hiang, Kong Bak Pau and my favourite yam paste dessert.

A sumptuous meal of 6 dishes + 1 dessert totals up to around RM280. Price was pretty reasonable and the food was yummy! Except that for a total of 8 pax, most of whom males, the serving portion tended to be small.

We went on to check-in to our hotel, Marvelux and had some difficulty in finding the place. The area surrounding it was under construction, and we weren't familiar with the how the street numbers run. When we finally arrived, and upon seeing the orange rooms at the first level, I nearly thought they offered KTV sessions. This is, of course, besides the point.
We paid around SGD40 per pax for a night stay which I found to be on the steep side. Given that we booked the hotel rather late, choices were rather limited. Having said that, the hotel was pretty good - clean, new and with friendly service. You can ask the hotel staff to help you make a restaurant reservation (tips to save overseas dialing fee!).

No.6, Jalan KLU 1, Taman Kota Laksamana Utama, 75200, Melaka.

A short drive away from the hotel brings us to the seaside. Along the street are mobile vendors selling snacks and drinks. If time permits, we would have stayed for the sunset!

It was getting late, and we had to leave for the night market at Jonker street. Starting from 6pm, the street would be closed to cars, and street vendors will start to populate the sides of the street, selling food, snacks and little handmade souvenirs.

Please try this stall that sells Nonya Kuehs. It's located at the start of the Jonker street and is really yummy. We went back the next day but was told that it wasn't opened ;(

Towards the end of the street is a stage, where seniors took turn to sing, livening up the street.

What's Malacaa without trying its cendol. We were told that the right way to eat the Cendol is to mix in the ice first, followed by the green little "monsters". It tasted quite different from that in Singapore, the Gula Melaka tended to be a slightly bitter and cendol not as sweet.

With that, we ended our first day in Malacca.

Part II: THE NEVER ENDING LOVE STORY ♥

The way we met up with each other was quite a blur, but one thing for sure, it wasn't love at first sight and wasn't all that romantic. My only recollection of how I met him was during trainings for a (different) trek. I've chosen to go for Yong Yup (Thinking back, I must have been crazy to have gone for it as my first trek) while he was training for a waterfall trek, Stong. Other bits and pieces of recollection was that he has a (family) car and had volunteered to drive C and me to a MRT near our home, and he did a bit of Daytona drive. Subsequently, he would usually be the guy with a car to drive us out for late night suppers.

That's me, photo taken during Yong Yup trek.
Within months, we were hanging out in a group. 2 guys and a girl. Together, we were mostly pre-occupied with SMUX activities (an outdoor adventure arm of SMU), staying overnight in the CCA room, planning for camps, going for treks etc. It was interesting as someone had actually thought I was hanging out with the other guy in the group. At that point in time, I didn't really gave Aiks a heck. He was not that outstanding, preferring to wear in big tees and slacks (Not that I dressed up, but o'well... impression counts).

One day, we were talking about organising a recreational trip to a beach. He suggested Perhentian, and then we started planning for it. I remembered he volunteered for it, while I reluctantly accepted as I had the uneasy feeling that he was trying to get near me. My first instinct was always to run away from whoever tries to woo me. During the trip and the next few treks that we embarked on, he was on a constant look out for me, sticking to me when I wanted to do something and refusing to be persuaded away. Is it persistence or irritation, I thought.

Me and Aiks in the front row. From our expression, I bet you can tell that we were forced to sit in this arrangement.
Eventually I was

1. Enlightened: A friend of mine asked if I would feel lost without this 'pest' by my side.

2. Touched: While he was crippling during a trek and literally on a walking stick, he still insisted on walking by my side.

3. Mesmerised: He walked in, one day, with a totally different hairstyle and I realised that he actually look good when well (would better be a better word?) groomed.

That's him in the orange polo, which got me.. erm. mes.. (can't continue). Perhaps I like someone from the eighties? lol
Next, you know what happened.

Today, we are officially together for more than six years. These six years wasn't all that smooth-sailing. We broke up and got back together. We quarreled and had different opinions. But most of the time, I was his priority and he takes care of me like a delicate flower (except when he's watching a TV, or playing games. You see, he can't multi-task). We hanged out (very) often; when there's no topics to talk about, we talked in funny baby languages and send emoticons; we respected each others' privacy and now, we are soon moving on to the next stage of life. Having talked to my friends about relationship matters, I've came to realise that I've bagged a gold.

On 25 Dec 2011, he proposed. With the help of my friends, it was indeed a well-planned out surprise. He was never good at surprises, but I guess years of being with me has brushed off some magic.

It happened in a blur. Such apt photo.
This year, year of 2014, will be a hectic and exciting year for both of us - solemnisation, pre-wedding photoshoot and planning, and the arrival of our lovenest.

Cheers to our love ♥♥

Part I: Take me around the world with you ♥

My recent trip to Malacca got me go trigger-happy. I have to say that Malacca is indeed a beautiful vintage city that I couldn't resist taking photos after photos of lookbook worthy pictures. To complete the lookbook would of course require models and as I always did, I volunteered a very unwilling couple of mine, asking them to pose whenever I spot a picture-worthy place. I'm sure this set of photos will be of use years later during their wedding - Ariel & SJ, you are welcome :))
Now, let's begin...

PART I: TAKE ME AROUND THE WORLD WITH YOU

This love story begins in the cyber space, and continues to ooze with so much love in the reality. In my eyes, they are considered a model couple. A couple who is not shy of openly displaying their love and affection for each other. I am already waiting for the day where A walks down the aisle, her hands in the his hands, filled with the blessings of others.

Part II: THE NEVER ENDING LOVE STORY (to be con't...)
I've made a second part to this blogpost, thinking perhaps it's time to dedicate a post to Aiks and my very own love story as year 2014 is going to be a really hectic and romantic year for us - ROM, photoshoot in taiwan, arrival of our long-awaited lovenest and planning for our ceremonial wedding.
